Double Gourd
Soda Syphon / Siphon
This fabulous wicker coverd doulble gourd Soda Syphon is in "as found" condition and has not been repaired or restored by us.
The syphon has a thick blown glass double gourd shape completely covered in a wicker mesh, this mesh prevented glass from dispersing in case of an explosion which apparently was common. The double gourd shape had a purpose, the top section was used for Tartaric Acid and Bicarbonate of soda (which reacted to create Carbon Dioxide) with the bottom section being used for water or other substance which needed to be made sparkling. The resultant gas would then force the water up through the glass tube attached to the nozzle. compressed carbon dioxide was popped into the valve at the top. The carbon dioxide was then released into the water to give you your soda water.
The wicker work is in good condition for its age with only two small breaks, I have tried to show this in the photographs. The bottle still has the original glass internal dispensing tube, this is damaged at both ends. The metal top has lost some of its\' original finish, but the handle moves fine, the syphon is uncleaned and has the usual marks and scuffs you would expect from an item of this age, all of this just adds to its\' character and charm, I personally love all these signs of use and history.
The syphon is very heavy.
It measures 47 cm (18 1/2 inches) high.
A true vintage decorative piece that would grace any home.
