This is a magnifying viewer built for the US military, probably in around 1950-1960, for close inspection of maps and likely reconnaissancephotographs. Both the viewer and the case are marked 4X, apparently referring to the magnification in the optics. It is in very good condition, and fully functional. It folds to fit within the included leather case. There is an adjustment knob on one side to adjust the center-to-center spacing between the two lenses, and that dimension is indicated in mm on the front of the viewer as it is adjusted. It is a high quality all metal design, obviously intended to last. The weight of the viewer without the case is just under 10 oz. Other than dust, the leather case is also in very good condition.
