Violin labeled Mat Hardie & Son Scottish Violin 1820 Excl. cond Repair tag 1851:
$3250.00
Up for sale is a beautiful full size Victorian Violin with a great soloist potential. The violin is labeled Mat Hardie and Son with the date 1820 written by hand on the makers label. The maker is listed in William Henleys Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers on page 535. Some of his violins were completed by his son under the same label after his death.
Very well done top and 2 piece Scottish Maple back. We have just set up this violin, it has only a couple of hours on it by us, It probably had not been played in the past 40 to 50 years more or less, it had a very old set up, and needed mostly glue, strings, and new setup.
This violin has been in our studio for quite a while, it was bought by me from an Antique Shop, up country, outside of London England.
A very strong selection of woods are used on this violin. This is a very well made instrument. A very closely spaced, almost invisible grain in the spruce top, and unflamed maple on the back and ribs.
The violin is full size. The color is a medium light reddish-brown with some variations. The scroll is grafted as original work by the maker.
The violin has a very nice and even voice through the ranges. Med- loud volume. Good response which will improve with more playing on the strings.
This violin Needs to be played to bring out its full potential. It has not been played except till now for a long long time. We have set it up, but have less than a few hours of playing time on the strings.
The measurement are:
Body length is 14-1/8 inches
Upper bout is: 6-1/2 inches
Lower bout is: 7-15/16 inches
Mid bout is: 4-3/8 inches
A wonderful violin. This should be at least $7,500-$10,000.00, in a good market, it is a real deal at this price.
