A spectacular vintage 1950s Navajo handcrafted sterling and Lone Mountain turquoise squash blossom necklace to add to your collection!

This gorgeous squash necklace features twelve blossoms and a Naja set with high-grade nuggets of Lone Mountain turquoise with amazing natural matrix. The turquoise nuggets are set in a shadowbox bezel mount that is accented with hand twisted sterling rope. The large Naja holds one large center cab and seven smaller nuggets in the traditional horseshoe shape. These were hand strung on two rows of handmade 7.75 mm sterling bench beads that tapers to a single strand.

The Naja measures about 3 1/4\" x 3\" and the necklace measures approximately 23 1/2\" long. The sterling has a nice, old pawn patina, that has not been cleaned, as most collectors prefer to keep the “old pawn” look.

A Little History on the Squash Blossom Necklace:

The inverted crescent pendant on squash-blossom necklaces, called the \'Naja\' by the Navajo,is found in various design forms throughout the world cultures.

In North America, the inverted crescent symbol was on various types of trade goods broughtfrom the East coast by other Europeans. The crescent pendant wasused from the early 1800\'son by the Shawnee, Delaware, Cheyenne, Comanche and Navajo tribes, among others.

The Naja is held in very high esteem by the Navajo as well as other peoples.

Onesymbol of the squash blossom can be found on ancient petroglyphsat theSaguaro National Monument in Arizona.It isbelieved that the flower symbol that we commonly see in necklaces was brought to the Navajo at the turn of the century, the 1800\'s to the 1900\'s. The blossom is represented with long petals beginning to open and a sphere attached at the base of the flower. The flower pendent is a representation of the Spanish-Mexican pomegranate and a variation of this design can be found in the motif of Granada, Spain.

In the Americas, Spanish colonial gentlemen wore variations of these pomegranate flower blossomson their shirts, capes and trousersas silver adornments. Some squash blossom necklaces that date from the 1880\'s and 1890\'s were made with hand-hammered Mexican silver coins, with the Naja in the same design as the Moor horse bridle pendants.

Najas can be found on all sorts of necklaces, however, not all squash blossom necklaces sport Najas. And there are necklaces with both the blossoms and the Najas, as well as other design elements such as religious symbols. As time has progressed, both the squash blossoms and the Naja havedeveloped into various designs andstyles.
