Thedocument specifically appoints 13 officers for Court Martial duty includingfuture Civil War Generals, DeRussy, Hardee, Thomas W. Sherman, etc…GATES SIGNS AS COLONEL COMMANDING at FORT ADAMS, RHODE ISLAND, NOV. 1852.

Civil War Military Service Biography of Gen. WILLIAM GATES

GATES,William, general, born in Massachusetts in 1788; died in New York, 7 October,1868. He was a son of Lemuel Gates, an officer in the Revolution, who died in1806. He was graduated at the United States military academy in 1806, receivingthe appointment of 2d lieutenant in the regiment of artillerists, and served ingarrison until 1812. When the war with Great Britain began, he was appointedacting adjutant of light artillery and aide to General Porter, and in 1813 hewas promoted to captain. He was engaged in the capture of York (now Toronto),Canada West, and in the bombardment and capture of Fort George. In May, 1814,he was transferred to the corps of artillery, and served in garrison andfrontier duty for several years. He was appointed captain of the 2d artilleryupon the reorganization of the army in June, 1821, and two years later wasbrevetted major. He served on garrison duty until 1832, when he was stationedat Fort Moultrie, Charleston harbor, during the nullification troubles. He tookpart in the Florida war, personally captured Osceola, and escorted theCherokees to the Indian territory. He served in the war with Mexico as colonelof the 3d artillery, and from 1846 till 1848 acted as governor of Tampico,Mexico. Subsequently he served on garrison duty, and retired from activeservice in 1863. He was brevetted brigadier-general in 1865 for long and faithfulservice.--His son, Collinson Reed, born in New York in 1816; died inFredericksburg, Texas, 28 June, 1849, was graduated at the United Statesmilitary academy in 1836, and appointed 2d lieutenant of the 4th infantry. Heserved in the Semi-hole war in 1836-\'8, when he was made 1st lieutenant of the8th infantry. In 18\'/8 he served on the northern frontier during the Canadaborder disturbances. He was engaged again in Florida against the SeminoleIndians in 1840. In 1843 he served in Texas, and in 1845 in the war withMexico, was in the battles of Palo Alto, 8 May, 1846, and Resaca de la Palma, 9May, 1846, where he was wounded and brevetted colonel. He was on recruitingservice in 1846, and in the following year returned to his regiment, beingengaged in various important battles of Mexico. In 1848 he was in garrison atJefferson barracks, Missouri, and in the following year served on frontier dutyin Texas.
