This scarcetea tile or tea stand was made in England during the height of the 19th centuryAesthetic movement. The round trivet measures a full 6” in diameter with arounded edge and flat unmarked bottom. It is about 1/4\" thick. It dates from the year 1878, made by theWedgwood factory in the Staffordshire potting region of England.

This winsomeVictorian trivet was part of the ‘Card Motto’ series produced by Wedgwood, withamusing Puckish illustrations of various motto and maxims from classical Englandliterature. The illustration is in the style of Puck, showing 4 imps tusslingover a burdensome pack of tooth picks or bamboo writing reeds. The motto onthis tea tray is:

HE LAUGHSAT SCARS THAT NEVER FELT A WOUND

The mottooriginates from Act 2 Scene 2 of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, reflecting on howonly someone who has never been hurt or wounded couldlaugh at another person’s suffering.

The tea standis marked on the edge with an impressed WEDGWOOD and the date stamp LKGrepresenting the year 1878. The Wedgwood factory produced the Card Motto imageson a variety of shapes and sizes of plates, encircled in a variety of artisticborders. The tea tray is an earlier example, with no border, setting off the blackcentral image with a simple ring of white. A very nice and simple example of anunusual form.

The tile isin very good, used condition with no chips cracks or repairs. Light crazing, notableuse wear to the rim and surfaces consistent with age. Offered as is, this lovely stand is unusual inform and sentimental in spirit.
