THE SPIRIT PORTFOLIO by Will Eisner. This is a limited edition of 1500 hand signed and numbered by Will Eisner of his classic character, The Spirit. THIS IS FOR ONE NUMBERED above 1200/1500. When I approached Will to do this Portfolio for my Collectors' Press imprint the intent was to capture quintessential Spirit scenes with brand new paintings. Will eagerly took to the project and six months after he started I picked up 11 paintings from him at his White Plains, NY, home and studio. Printed via offset lithography using the highest quality printing on special acid free Strathmore art stock, Will was exceedingly happy with the resulting fidelity to his originals. The Portfolio features an introductory Plate from Will along with some color photos I took at his studio while he was working on one of the Plates, 10 full color paintings plus one Plate of black and white printing of his original pencil sketches. When we were in the planning process of the Portfolio Will sent me page after page of suggested ideas for the Plates that he sketched on 8.5x11 typing paper. I thought these were so gorgeous that I included the concept sketches for one of my favorite Plates, "Dead End" as a bonus 11th plate. And I didn't stop there. The inside front and back of each hardbound slipcase has several more of the pencils. In addition I published a special magazine/booklet printing all of the pencil sketches. It made a nice and complete package for all Will Eisner and Spirit fans. The Portfolio is encased in a handmade hardcover slipcase. This was commissioned from the 100 year old San Francisco book binding firm Cardoza James. Each one of the 1500 slipcases was hand made with special "Spirit Blue" buckram cloth debossed on the front in gold with a special title logo Will created for the Portfolio. Special laid end papers and containment flaps finished off the inside with the two extra preliminary drawings.
I have around 20 of these left that have been in storage since 1980. They are as near to mint as you will find, but note that many of the Portfolio cases have minor scuff marks due to shipment from Cardoza James without sheets in between the cases. The raised thread of the cloth material contributed to the minor flaws. But nowhere will you find better examples of these than from me. This sale is for no specific number. I will send the lowest number in stock over 1200I also have several with numbers under 25 which will be in another sale if you are one of the "low number" fans.
Also included in this package is a set of color photos I took during various visits to Will and Ann's home in White Plains in the late '70's (jeez, he was 10 years younger then than I am now - and he seemed so old then - but vital, playing tennis nearly every day and eating healthy). Also some more material including copies of letters he sent me as well as a copy of the very rare "Spirit Chardonnay" wine label and...well even a few more cool Eisner and Spirit items.
