William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) was an American painter and photographer known for his photographs of the American west. He was a Civil War soldier who served at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the Civil War, Jackson headed west. In 1867, he settled in Omaha, Nebraska and entered the photography business. It was here that he made his very famous photographs of the local Indians. In 1870, Jackson joined the U.S. Government Survey (later to become the U.S. Geological Survey), where he surveyed the Yellowstone River and the Rocky Mountains, which eventually led to the creation of Yellowstone National Park, America\'s first National Park. When Jackson returned home, he had with him photographic evidence of western landmarks that had previously seemed only a fantastic myth: the Grand Tetons, Old Faithful, and Colorado\'s Rockies. In 1942, Jackson died at the age of 99. Recognized as one of the last surviving Civil War veterans, he was buried at Arlington Cemetery.
