WW1 1916 German M-16 Steel Helmet/ World War 1 I WWI original.:
$266.11

Great War Centennial, highly collectible original German helmet.Apparently the person who just bought (and returned this) thought the helmet was a new reproduction. Thus his negative review. Anyways-So, it looks like the value is significantly higher than he bought it for so I am relisting it. His loss.Original German model 1916 helmet. This spent 2 years in the first World War that would be about 24 months in a brutal war that killed millions. Helmet is 101 years old. Helmet shows wear as photos show. There is some surface rust but I am not touching it. I suppose if you wanted to you could steel wool it.If you need higher resolution photos of any part of the helmet just let me know.Name written inside helmet \'Josef Fa\"th\" Perhaps the researcher in you could dig into his name and history?#64 painted on helmet, 64 stamped on leather band and stamped BF6 on inside of helmet. Photo #9 shows stamping. From the condition I suspect this was used in combat as the wear on it is more than a behind the lines soldier if he would have had if kept it after the war. So either there was a lucky soul that didn\'t get nailed in the skull, got a body shot or survived unscathed. Put this in a glass case with lights on it and it would look great.Description from a helmet collector below:##German m.1916, characterized by the heavy leather liner band - the m.17/18 had a metal band.  This is an early-war model and it very distinctly has the soldier\'s name printed inside.  The minuses are that there is one liner pad missing and (from what I can tell in the photo) the chinstrap is incomplete.##offer now the Centennial of WWI will surely increase the value. From Wikipedia:The Stahlhelm was introduced into regular service during the Verdun campaign in early 1916.The M1916 design had side-mounted horn-like ventilator lugs which were intended to be support for an additional steel brow plate or Stirnpanzer, which only ever saw limited use by snipers and trench raiding parties, as it was too heavy for general use.[8]The shell came in different sizes, from 60 to 68, with some size 70s reported. Helmet weight varied from 0.98 kg to 1.4 kg, depending on shell size. The suspension, or liner, consisted of a headband with three segmented leather pouches, each holding padding materials, and leather or fabric cords could be adjusted to provide a comfortable fit. The one-piece leather chin strap was attached to the shell by M1891 chinstrap lugs, the same kind used in the Pickelhaube helmet. The M1916 design provided excellent protection: Reserve Lieutenant Walter Schulze of 8th Company Reserve Infantry Regiment 76 described his combat introduction to the helmet on the Somme, 29 July 1916:\"... suddenly, with a great clanging thud, I was hit on the forehead and knocked flying onto the floor of the trench... a shrapnel bullet had hit my helmet with great violence, without piercing it, but sufficiently hard to dent it. If I had, as had been usual up until a few days previously, been wearing a cap, then the Regiment would have had one more man killed.\"[9]But the helmet was not without its flaws. The ventilator horns often let cold air in during the winter, requiring the wearer to block the vents with mud or fabric. The large, flared skirt tended to make it difficult for soldiers to hear, distorting surrounding sounds and creating an echo when the wearer spoke.Originally painted Feldgrau (field grey), the Stahlhelm was often camouFlaged by troops in the field using mud, foliage, cloth covers, and paint. Official issue cloth covers in white and grey appeared in late 1916 and early 1917. CamouFlage paint was not formally introduced until July 1918, when German Army Order II, No 91 366, signed by General Erich Ludendorff on 7 July 1918, outlined official standards for helmet camouFlage. The order stipulated that helmets should be painted in several colors, separated by a finger-wide black line. The colors should be relevant to the season, such as using green, brown and ochre in summer.[8]After the effectiveness of the M1916 design was validated during the 1916 campaigns, incremental improvements were subsequently made. The M1917 version saw improvements to the liner, but was otherwise identical to the original design.

Additional review by helmet collector and restorer states: \"It is a reissue helmet, meaning it got repainted at least once during the war. Its a pretty textbook example.\"

I believe the helmet wear/ surface rust around ventilation/ posts show pattern consistent with a hessian cloth cover with wear pattern matching the leather patches used to protect abrasion from additional steel sniper plate. Horizontal rust bands on back of helmet appear to match those of a leather band that would have wrapped the back attaching the sniper plate.
Upcoming items from my collection will be: English WWI Canteen, Trench periscope, German WWI Tunic, English WWI Tunic, WWI Doughboy helmets with insignias, trench whistles, WWI Coast Guard Uniform- complete with sea bag, WWI American pants, reproduction WWI Shoes (tacked bottom) Iron Cross, WWI German Gas Mask (with and in canister) WWI American Gas Mask, autographs of last WWI Veterans, US, English and German, german \"Got Mit Uns\" leather belt and buckle (steel buckle) and more.
