Trench Art Match Box HolderA brass souvenir trench art matchbox holder.Hand-engraved to the front with \'Cambrai 1914-1918\' with an Art-Nouveau style surround.The rear has a crossed branch pattern and there\'s a flower and star on the side. These engravings have been worn very smooth over the last hundred years and a previous owner has given it a coat of clear laquer.

Souvenir trench art was made by the local civilian population to supplement family income in war-ravaged Europe. Made from shell casings etc. left over in the immediate post-war period.

In 1914, the German army occupied Cambrai in northern France. This occupation, which lasted for four years, was marked by looting, requisitions and the arrest of hostages.In 1917 the town was the theatre of theBattle of Cambrai, which saw the massive use oftanksfor the first time.In 1918, the Germans burned the city centre before leaving...
