For your consideration, and recently purchased from a local estate,is a vintage 1940\'s Second World War Era aircraft aluminum suitcase. The suitcase is in great period condition, but the front flange does have some bends in it across the edge and there are scuffs and scrapes here and there over the outside of the entire piece. The rivets are all present and holding very firmly and the latches are both in good working order. I consider this suitcase to be crudely made as there is no proper locking mechanism, but a simple wire latch that closes simply by turning the brass inner knob with a blunt object. The rear hinges and handle also appear fairly crude, however there is a German manufacturer sticker on the front.
This suitcase was purchased from a local estate and the previous owner told me he was given this suitcase to carry his belongings when he left the Prisoner Of War Camp at the end of the Second World War and was actually made by his fellow detainees in the camp\'s metal shop with pieces of airplanes. I have a very hard time reconciling the fact that a POW camp would allow prisoners to either handle metal, or fabricate metal, but I am no expert in wartime POW practices and am merely passing along the story that I was told. He insisted this was factual.
