The badge is made in STERLING SILVER(925 parts of pure silver out of 1000) with top quality enamel. The centermedallion with the Soviet soldier holding a rifle is a separate part solderedto the star base. The badge weighs 30.0 grams not including the screw plate andmeasures 47.1 mm in height, 49.3 mm in width. There is an individual serialnumber 628717 engraved on the back.Judging by the serial number, it was probably bestowed in April – June 1944,so it could be an award for the sweeping Soviet offensive in southern Ukraine,the battle for Crimea, or the offensive in the north that took Finland out ofthe war. The name / feat / biographical details of the recipient can bedetermined by this number through the Russian military archives.

Unlike the Red Stars issued later, theearly issues such as this one were typically for bravery on the battlefield.Later, starting from November 1944, the Order of the Red Star was oftenbestowed for length of military service – any officer with 15 years ofuninterrupted service was automatically eligible for it. The practice ofissuing military awards for length of service continued until the late 50s, anda large portion of the Red Stars from the last year and a half of WW2 are suchlength of service issues. It was of course much harder to earn a Red Starearlier in the war!

This piece is in GREAT CONDITION! Theenamel has tiny contact marks and scratches, but it is completely free of theusual chips or significant flaking. The enamel on this piece is 100% ORIGINAL,has not been replaced or repaired, and it shows nice luster.

The center medallion has only minimal wearto the high points, and its details are still beautifully defined and crisp.The serial number is guaranteed original, has not been altered. There is veryattractive dark patina to silver on both the obverse and reverse. The screwpost is about 12 mm long, has not been reduced. The order comes with ORIGINALscrew plate in SILVER (unlike the late war and post-war issues that had screwplate in Melchior or “German Silver” alloy).
