WWI 1916 CEF M1915 MITCHELL - WILSON PATTERN ROSS DUMMY FENCING TRAINER :
$430.00

Pre-Description Cautionary Note:The Wilson trainer, holding 1915 dated patent No. CA167229, was simply designed as a practicing aid, basically for sport and proficiency, a mere overlong hardwood shaft supporting a false bayonet, being implemented as a foil, épée or sabre, as those employed in competitive fencing.

Greetings! For your consideration this time is an infrequently offered, absolutely genuine First World War period CEF - Canadian Expeditionary Force issued oddity directly associated with the serviceman’s preliminary training in close-quarter confrontations, in this respect, a patented M1915 Mitchell - Wilson Pattern Bayonet Fighting Dummy Trainer, a fencing appliance contrived by Canadian inventor William Mitchell, manufactured by The Harold A. Wilson Company Limited of Toronto, Ontario in 1916. Weighing in at nearly 10-pounds, this is a well-balanced trainer obviously inspired by the contours of the Ross Mk. III (1910), particularly the stock, which has been equipped with a hefty solid steel counterpoise forged as a butt plate. The blunt-nosed pseudo-bayonet concept, based on the 17 1/8-inch blade length of the Pattern 1907 bayonet, actually mimics the “Impalement” action of a forceful thrust. The Canadian government acceptance mark, the “C” encased broad arrow, is well-visible, just below the contractor’s stamping. Historically, Harold A. Wilson, a well-respected businessman who equally owned the dummy trainer patent, lost his son, Harold Mackenzie Wilson, age 24, an officer serving with the 15th Infantry Battalion, 48th Highlander of Canada, in June of 1916. The trainer has been undeniably fielded, characterized by obvious defensive dinging and contact scarring. A period repair should equally be noted. Additional questions always gladly answered!
