This is an interesting grouping of nine original WWII V-Mail letters, written during the 1944 campaign against the Japanese in the Admiralty Islands by a soldier serving the the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. This soldier later participated in the invasion of Leyte, Philippine Islands, and on Leyte and Luzon in the campaign to liberate the Philippines.

*** One letter has notes on the back which apparently refer to information that this soldier had provided his family, confirming that he was; in danger, near combat, in General MacArthur\'s force, eating well and in good health, etc.

There are nine original V-Mail letters in this grouping, all written by this soldier in 1944. They begin in March 1944 during the early stages of the Admiralty Islands battle, and then the bulk of the letters were written in May (during the period in which pockets of Japanese resistance were being mopped up). There is a variety of content. A number of the letters were written on consecutive days in early May. In one letter this soldier states his location specifically as the Admiralty Islands. There is content about his unit (some men are mentioned by name), content about the islands, a segment in which he expresses his relief that he hadn\'t been sick since arriving in the tropics, and more.

*** These original V-Mail letters were written by Private William B. Hemphill of Missouri. Private Hemphill served in action against the Japanese in the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. After serving in the Admiralty Islands campaign Private Hemphill participated in the October 1944 invasion of Leyte, Philippine Islands, and then on Leyte anfd Luzon in the campaign to liberate the Philippines.
