This intriguingly RARE water bottle came from a mound alongthe banks of Reelfoot Lake in the extreme northwestern sector of Tennessee, near the Kentucky state-line border. Theartifact was acquired from a private, out-of-state collection some timeago by this site during field work for abook series.
This wonderfully formedpottery bottle has slight, vertical “ribs” along its sides. Some brown-colored patina is still visiblealong exterior patches.
The artifact shows someground pitting along the bottom section and some soil stain. Neck rim show minor use/age dings.
This is a mysterioussection of the country, as the current lake was formed only AFTER the regionsubsided during the massive New Madrid earthquakes of 1811/1812. For thousands of years Native Americansburied their loved ones in mounds scattered throughout the area, some ending upas lake-front “property” after the quakes.
It is believed that theChickasaw and Choctaw tribes who once lived in the area, left in the early1300s, reserving the area for hunting and burials.
A wonderfully complete“bottle” that brings to life a once thriving past of ancient Native Americans.
