Waterman, in the 1920s and 1930s, offered a variety of nibs that were color-coded. The pens initially were Red Ripple and later, in the 1030s iteration of the 5 and 7 series, the pens were black celluloid. The Ripple pens had a colored ring at the top of the cap which matched the color inscribed on the nib itself. The Black celluloid model had a colored plastic disc in the butt end of the pen to match the color on the nib.

Green, Rigid Point, for manifolding.

Red, standard for general use

Pink, Flex Fine Point, for stenographers.(my description: XF Flex with nice kick back).

Purple, Stiff Fine Point, for accountants.

Blue, Blunt Point, a broad point.

Yellow, Rounded Point, for left-handed writers.

You are offerding on a Waterman #5 Red Ripple fountain pen. The pen has the much-sought-after Pink designated nib. This nib is an X Fine with controlled flex and allows for wide variation of line width and is “ideal” for the avid calligrapher. Not a wet noodle. Nib aside, this is actually a very handsome pen indeed. With modest trim highlighted by a flared cap top.

The pen is in good condition with no cracks, chips or other serious damage. The nib is marked “Pink”. The Pink ring on the cap is intact with one split. The barrel imprints are excellent(I have highlighted the imprints with white). Even the word “Ripple” is clear. The metal trim is 9/10. The sac is in good shape though not replaced by me. I know the former owner was using the pen on a regular basis.
