Wayside Candles was a division of Standard Oil Company. When Standard Oil began, there was no real need for making gasoline as there were very few cars on very few roads. So they wisely took one of the byproducts of the early refining process, paraffin wax, and produced candles. The first candles made were utilitarian. The candles were used by mining companies, plumbers, and dairies.Interestingly enough, the candle business changed over here when our boys went \"over there.\" In 1918, the company\'s entire production of candles was purchased by the U.S. Army for use in the trenches. The shop worked around the clock and eventually shipped 285 million candles to France by war\'s end. But when the boys returned, they talked about the candles they saw in France and England used for decorative purposes and thus the novelty candle-making industry ignited.
