Thisset uses a WESTERN ELECTRIC solid brass dial candlestick polished to a mirror finish. It is an original. No reproduction parts. The Gray Mfg Cocoin collector is original. This one is heavy cast iron. The dial produces a loud clicking sound that collectors like. This dial is an early #2 that was factory converted to a #4. The finger stop was moved from the outside to the inside outer edge of the dial. The modification was made to allow it to fit the recessed mounting of other telephones.

Western Electric Dial Candlestick Telephones were made of solid brass and painted black. Only very special people were allowed to have a polished brass one. While doing research for the UNTOUCHABLE productions and series I discovered a picture of Al Capone talking on a polished brass dial candlestick. I can imagine the fate of a telephone representative telling Al he could not have one. My company CHICAGO OLD TELEPHONE CO supplied over 60 telephones for the productions including a beautiful solid brass one for AL’ scenes.

Operators were trained to detect thedistinctive sound of each coin and the timing. Nickel strikes a brassbell once that enters the coin drawer. Dime strikes the bell on oneside then travels around and strikes the same bell on the other sidemaking a ding-ding sound. Quarter strikes a wire coil making a single gongsound. Many companies attempted to produce coin collectorsbut failed to match the quality, innovative design anddependability of the Gray.

This model was popular withhotels. Phones in rooms were rarely offered at this early date. This station was keptbehind the counter at the front desk to prevent stealing to get coins. The phone wasplaced on the counter to accommodate guests. Upscale hotels oftenbrought the pay station to your table in their dining room. A big deal at that time.Coin collectors were used on different types of phones. Thisis the most interesting model and my favorite. Early non dialcandlesticks were most often used. I chose a dial type, which isworth 3 times as much, but allows it to dial out.
