Whiting& Davis 1920’s Baby Mesh Vanity Bag Venetian Fringe Sapphire Clasp WristletThis mesh bag comes from ourpersonal collection that was assembled some 30 years ago and put away in a boxafter the Santa Monica earthquake of 1994. This vintage purse has not seen thelight of day until now.Points of interest:Although heavily tarnished andprobably frequently used, this bag has so many unique details…starting at thetop:1.The wristlet strap features twoadjustable & decorated slides that adjust the opening size for the wrist.(The slides are decorated on both sides). The strap has a snake skin patternand because there are so many links the chain has great flow and flexibility.2.The clasp is a ball and socketstyle with a single Sapphire in the ball. 3.The frame is decorated in a fairly straightforward vine pattern, but the frame has more character in its shape than usual.4.The mesh is attached to the framewith the “spiral wire” process that Whiting and Davis developed.5.In inside of the frame reveals three stamps: Alpacca GST (inside a Diamondshaped symbol) | German(y)6.The hinges are in very goodcondition. The mesh appears to be fully attached to the hinges.
7.The “Baby” mesh is in very goodcondition – does not appear to be missing any pieces - excellent silky texture. 8.This bag was named the Venetianand is identified by the Fleurette inset just above the fringe.9.The bottom features metal fringe.10.The bag is about 8.5” long by 3”wide. The carry strap adds about 6” to the length – making a total length of 14½”. And it weighs 4.2 oz. or 118 grams. As noted above, the bag is verytarnished but it appears to be well taken care of. I would rate it as at least “VeryGood”.
