A compound lever corkscrew with 10 levers and struts,with a looped finger handle and helical wire worm.

It is marked on both sides with the letters JHSB WIERS PATENT 4377. which is probably an abbreviation for James Heeley & Sons Birmingham.(photo 4)

The bronzed,or copper washed finish is in good condition.

There is some play onthe lower pivots.

The worm has a good point.

However there are two longitudinal cracks in the helix mid way along theworm. One about 13mm long (photo5)and the other 5mm.(photo 6)

I have notseen a problem like this before, and it looks as if it could have been caused in the manufacturing process. On close examination

with a loupe it appears to be caused by an impurity in the metal which has subsequently oxidised.

B i t o f H i s t o r y .

The first description of this type of corkscrew was in the British patent of 1884 from Marshall Arthur Wier.The patent describes the 10 arm

design,with six levers and four struts.

It was made by James Heeley, who described it in his catalogue as \"lighter for ladies use\".

The spelling Wier is on the patent and some of the corkscrews, and Weir in the Heeley catalogue and other corkscrews.
