WILLIAM JACOBS

Chicago, 1897-1973

A Chicago native, WilliamJacobs studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and at HullHouse with German Expressionist artist Herman Sachs and urban realist painterEnella Benedict.

In J. Z. Jacobson\'s 1933book, Art of Today: Chicago, Jacobs described his interest inExpressionism and his approach to depicting urban scenes in the Depression era:

I consider my work anexpression of the age. I am painting industrial subjects and find them veryinteresting. . . . I have painted many street scenes in Chicago, particularlythe Maxwell Street market. Therefore, I suppose, it might be said that my workis peculiarly Chicagoan.

I believe that art shouldbe universal in spirit, and therefore I do not consider my work an expressionof the spirit of any national, racial, religious, political, social or economicgroup, body, background or attitude.
