PAIR WOOD & HUGHES COIN SILVER INSECT NAPKIN RINGS, J. P. MORGAN FAMILY, 1882,ORIGINAL BOX This pair of aesthetic napkin rings by Wood and Hughes is unlike any you have seen before or likely will see again. They are rectangular, which makes them unusual from the outset. Each is decorated with an insect with flowers, leaves, and stems. The remarkable thing is that the two insects are not identical; one is male and the other female.The pair of napkin rings has all of the wonderful features of the Aesthetic Period--a nod to nature, asymmetry and a japonesque feel.

Each napkin ring is 2 inches square by one inch in depth. One has on it the name \"Kate\" and the other the name \"Charlie\". They are both dated 1882. Each is very heavy, weighing 2.6 ounces on an accurate postal scale. The napkin rings were made by the noted New York firm of Wood and Hughes. The box containing the rings is clearly original and shows wear. Inside the box is a card (shown in the last picture) which relates the fact that the napkin rings were a gift to Charlie and Kate Morgan - of the J. P. Morgan family - to celebrate their wedding in 1882. The previous owner declared fervently that this information is correct.
