This is a rare original World War 1 brass sighting compass with it\'s original leather case. This is a very complicated precision instrument that is in perfect working order. The compass has it\'s original patina and wear and has not been buffed and cleaned to bright brass like many other pieces. No dents, heavy dings or damage other than mentioned. It does have a cracked cover lens that is really not a big deal. It certainly has no affect on the functioning of the compass and it is still solid with no holes or seperation. It could also easily be replaced by any competent watchmaker. As a matter of fact, I can probably arrange to have it done for you for a very small fee if you want it done before I ship it to you. Dial does have a spot of flaking on it, but again not really detracting and does not affect function. The compass has many moving parts and all function well. There is a momentary freeze button, a dial locking button that automatically engages when the lid is closed, a bezel set screw, a rotating bezel for sighting, and a moveable hinged sighting lens (lens is clear). The compass can be used as a sighting compass with the lens magnifying the scale for accurate degree readings or as a normal compass just by reading the dial. The compass works and indicates direction perfectly. Desireable 360 degree dial. Leather case is solid with no seperation at seams. Just a really nice original piece dated 1917.
