This is an interesting original WWII letter, written by a U.S. Marine Corps flamethrower operator who was severely wounded in action on Iwo Jima on the 22nd of February 1945, during an attack on the Japanese Motomaya airfields near the base of Mount Suribachi. This marine was then evacuated to a hospital ship. He witnessed the historic Flag raising on Mount Suribachi on February 23rd from the deck of the hospital ship.

*** Note that this marine\'s experiences on Iwo Jima are well documented, and are the subject of several online articles. According to his own account he killed 20-25 Japanese soldiers with his flamethrower, and was then hit by a Japanese shell as he was returning to the beach to obtain more fuel for his weapon. The same shell that wounded him killed three other marines who were with him. He was then evacuated to a hospital ship, from which he witnessed the Flag raising on Mount Suribachi on February 23rd.

This marine served in the 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The 21st Marines landed on Iwo Jima on the 21st of February, three days before the bulk of the 3rd Division. The 21st Marines went into action on February 22nd, temporarily attached to the 4th Marine Division. They joined in the attack on Motomaya airfields No. 1 and 2 near the base of Mount Suribachi. This marine was wounded by a Japanese shell during the battle for the airfields, after killing many Japanese soldiers with his flamethrower (according to his own statements in a published account).

*** This letter was written in October 1944 by Private First Class John Pappas, 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The letter was written on Guam. The 3rd Marine Division had fought in the 1944 battle for Guam, and then remained on the island, eliminating pockets of Japanese resistance and preparing for their next operation (Iwo Jima).

The 21st Marine Regiment landed on Iwo Jima on D+2, several in advance of the remainder of the 3rd Marine Division. The regiment went into action temporarily attached to the 4th Marine Division. Pfc. Pappas was wounded in the early stages of his regiment\'s fighting, near the foot of Mount Suribachi.

The letter was written on Guam on the 3rd of October, 1944. There is interesting content, including segments about Pappas\' brother Nicholas, who was on Saipan with an army engineer battalion.

The letter comes in it\'s original censored cover.
