1924 LARGE SIZE GERMAN RARITY
This very rare, large sized Weimar Republic bill (even larger than U.S. Large!) isnot only extremely beautiful but also extremely historic and scarce.
The 1924 Reichsbanknote issue was intended to replace ever-increasing denominations (up to Billions of Marks!) that had evolved due to rampant inflation in Germany. The absurdity of having to pay for a loaf of bread with a suitcase full of paper money forced the Government to act.
Each new Reichsmark was equal to 1,000 Milliarden inflationary Reichsmarks. That means that this billwas worth 100,000 Milliarden Reichsmark! Witha Milliard equal toourBillon, the value ofthis bill was positively staggering (100 TRILLIONin our numbers!!). This tells you how very rare it is and why you see so few of them offered in high grade.
This beautiful 100 Mark notefeaturesthe portrait of an English Lady by Hans Holbein. In addition to the awesome multi-color engraving, the note is 100% filled with rare and unusual watermark designs showing oversized, overlapping Weimar Republic coins with the Imperial Eagle. The right end is embossed with a treasury seal and a myriad of high relief decorative details. The left 2/3rds has amazing aquamarine and yellow tinting!! Truly a work of art!!
This bank note is usually offered in no better thanVG. Rarely will you see it in any grade above Fine. This example is Crisp Very Fine to Extra Fine!! It has only3-4 light folds visible at an angle.
