Yayoi Kusama moved to New York in 1957, where she quickly became a part of the city\'s international avant-garde. Kusama became a fixture of the New York avant-garde, having her works exhibited alongside the likes of Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg and George Segal during the early 1960s, where she became associated with the pop art movement. There, she began to make artwork using patterns of dots and nets, a motif she has continued to develop and deploy throughout her career in her work in all media, ranging from painting and drawing to film, performance and large-scale Environments. Based back in her native Japan since 1973, Kusama has been widely exhibiting her work around the world.Kusama’s most famous pumpkin creation to date is a six-foot tall fibreglass sculpture in yellow and black from 1994. The public artwork is located at Benesse Art Site on the Japanese island of Naoshima, which is dedicated to international art framed in natural Environments. While this new body of work is more muted in tone, the plant’s hardiness as both an organic object and conceptual self-portrait is perfectly embodied in the contrasting black and bronze hues along its bulbous surface, and it is decorated with textured dot gradations that are synonymous with the artist’s Pop aesthetic.
