AnAfrican Tribal Creations gallery sale!!!This sale is for a YorubaShango Dance Wand. These wands are intended as an object to be carried byworshippers loyal to the god Shango, especially during celebrations that champion him, and are considered one of the most important pieces of art in the Shango cult. In the canon of Yoruba mythology,Shango, or Sango, was once a mortal king, and an ancestor of the Yoruba people. He was considered to be an extremely powerful, and often violent ruler, capable of producing thunder and lightening. This power, however, eventually resulted in his death, which came through the accidental destructionof his own palace with lightning. His followers believed that after his death, he became a deity. Wands or staffs such as these typically depict a follower ofShango. The colors red and white, sacred to Shango, often embellish the carving and are procured from natural pigments.Known as a trickster god among the Yoruba pantheon, Eshu is widely worshipped, and both adored and feared by his followers. The god is commonly blamed for deeds of mischief, but also for great rewards and fortune, and terrible misfortune as well. Like the wands of the Shango cult, similar objects are produced by those who closely worship Eshu, and these can be quickly recognized by the characteristic headdress displayed on this piece. This wand is medium sized, featuring a male worshipper, kneeling with an offering in hand, and displays a thick chocolate brown patina, and pigment in many areas, as is common for these pieces. It features the also characteristic facial scarification marks which are part of almost all Yoruba art. The pigment is still relatively strong, with normal wear and exposure related marks in evidence. It does not appear to have undergone any breaks or repairs. This piece should make a nice addition to any collection.
