Description

Rare Japanese woven bamboo ikebana basket made from natural \'madake\'.

Estimated Taisho era (1912-1916) from Western Japan.

Comes with original bamboo otoshi insert tube. (Photo 1, 5 & 12)

Dimensions: Height 12.5” x Diameter 5”

Ideal basket for dramatic floral display in a tall upright style (photo 2) or slanting style (photo 3).

Excellent overall detail shows skilled craftsmanship in effortless pattern.

The artist first split the bamboo to get 36 thin, pliable strips about 1/64th widths of the original bamboo, each measuring about 30 inch in length. Each of these thin 36 strips are further smoothened over their entire length, at the constant risk of breakage.

The Base: is a chrysanthemum form made by layering strips in a radial arrangement and mat plaiting around these radially arranged strips to form a spiral pattern (Photo 6). This particular style is common in baskets between 1800 to the 1900s especially from Western Japan. A wide strip of bamboo (the signature plate) is inserted in to the center of the base, typically this is where the artist signs his name. However, the artist did not sign this basket.

The Body: A slender and tall body is achieved by plaiting using a variation on twinning method and using three horizontal elements in a 2-1 twill. A Y-like pattern reminiscent of pine needles is created by changing orientation of the pattern in alternate rows (Photos 4 & 9).

The Rim: is edged on the inside and echoes the base rim in a simple overlap style using wider strips of the bamboo. (Photos 4, 8, 10 & 11)

The simple form, fine pine pattern, neat edges as in this basket and finishings are all characteristics of a skilled bamboo artist.

Condition: Excellent antique CONDITION. Wear consistent with age. Please refer pictures for details.

Style Tip:Arrange flowers inthis basket in a nook or genkan with spring or summer fresh flowers for a wabi Sabi feel
