c.1930s MARY ANDERSON HOOSIER SALON OHIO RIVER VALLEY VILLAGE GOUACHE WATERCOLOR:
$495.00

Up for sale is this beautiful estate fresh gouache painting on board by listed American artist Mary Anderson. Anderson was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists. The I believe the painting is of an Ohio River Valley village. The scene is a river mouth or estuary and features a windblown tree on a point or peninsula. The detail in the sky and shoreline are stunning. Mary Anderson was a member of the Brown County School of artist and she spent most of her career in Indiana and Kentucky near the Ohio River. She also worked as an illustrator and is known in particular for her work in creating the Morton Salt Girl and the character for Old Dutch Cleaner. Mary exhibited from 1928 to 1937 in the Hoosier Salon and is referenced in their book as showing 14 of her works during this time winning 5 prizes in 1928. This painting measures approximately 9&1/2\" inches tall and about 13&1/2\" inches wide without the frame and about 14&1/2\" by 18&1/2\" in the carved period frame. The painting is signed Mary Anderson in the bottom left hand corner. The gouache painting is amazingly detailed and has great brush strokes that give it an impressionistic feel. A beautiful addition to any wall!

The Hoosier Salon is an annual juried art exhibition that features the work of Indiana artists and provides them with an outlet to market their work. The Hoosier Salon Patron\'s Association, the nonprofit arts organization that organizes the event, also operates year-round galleries in Carmel, Indiana and New Harmony, Indiana. These spaces host exhibitions of Salon artists throughout the year, as well as workshops and demonstrations. An artist must have lived in Indiana and must be a member of the Hoosier Salon arts organization to become eligible for the Salon\'s exhibitions. The Hoosier Salon has exhibited art from many of Indiana\'s most notable painters, sculptors, cartoonists, and mixed-media artists, including Hoosier Group artists, several members of the Brown County Art Colony, and other artists with ties to Indiana. The Daughters of Indiana, a group of women who were born in Indiana but resided in the Chicago metropolitan area, hosted the first annual Hoosier Salon in 1925 at the Marshall Field and Company\'s galleries in Chicago. In 1942 the annual exhibition was relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana, where it has been held at several venues, including the William H. Block Company and the L. S. Ayres and Company department stores, the Indiana State Museum, and the Indiana Historical Society. The Hoosier Salon has survived wars, economic recessions, a fire, venue changes for its annual exhibition, relocation of its offices and gallery spaces, and modifications to its outreach programs. In 2014 the Hoosier Salon celebrated its ninetieth continuous year of annual exhibitions.

TheBrown County Art Colonyis anartist colonyformed inNashvilleandBrown County, Indiana. Adolph Shulzis considered to be the founder of the colony, encouraging many Indiana and regional artists to come to Brown County to paint. Though artists such asWilliam McKendree Snyderhad been coming to Brown county as early as 1870, the colony is considered to have been firmly established in 1907 when the noted painterT. C. Steelemoved there. The dean of Indiana painters, Steele built a home and studio on a large plot of land west of Nashville nearBelmontand made it his permanent home. Its proximity toIndiana Universityin Bloomington allowed Steele to accept a position asartist in residencethere in 1922. An art association was incorporated in 1926 withCarl Grafas the first president. In 1954, the two associations split into two organizations: The Brown County Art Gallery and Museum and The Brown County Art Guild. Both organizations continue to maintain galleries in Nashville in which art created by the early artists is displayed along with the art of contemporary members which is for sale.
