A beautiful and very large example of an antique mid 19thCentury Victorian Jacquard loom woven wool paisley shawl of large rectangularproportions, probably Scottish in origin and dating to circa 1860.

The superb Kashmir inspired design incorporates elongated\'boteh\' paisley shapes and side borders of Eastern inspired arched designs andfloral motifs. Each end is finished in coloured epaulettes and fine tassles,clearly showing each of the fivenaturalcolours used - green, red,ochre, cream, pale blue and black.

The Paisley patternis the English term for a designusing theboteh, a droplet-shaped vegetable motif of Persian or IndianKashmir origin. Such designs became very popular in the West in the 18th and19th centuries, following imports of post-Mughal versions of the design fromBritish India, especially in the form of Kashmir shawls, and were then imitatedlocally. Its western name derives from the Scottish town of Paisley, a centrefor textiles where quality woven paisley designs became widely produced duringthe early-mid 19thCentury.
