Manufactured by the Seroco Camera Company - actually by Conley for Sears Roebuck & Co., which purchased Conley after the turn of the century. This is a typical “box” type, drop bed camera for 5x7 glass plates. Dimensions: closed - 8.5” x 8.5” x 3.75”, open with maximum extension - 18” - a BIG camera. Serial number 28927 - the removable back serial number matches the body. The outer leather shows typical wear from use, but is 100% complete. The original handle is intact. Burke & James 2-way spirit level is externally mounted on top of the camera body & still functions properly. The drop-bed over-extends and opens to reveal a gorgeous interior, with polished & lacquered mahogany and brilliant brass metalwork with nickel accents on the shutter. The double-extension red leather bellows are beautiful - supple & in wonderful condition with deep maroon color. I don’t know if they are light-tight, but I seriously doubt it after more than 100 years. The top bellows ring that attached to the lensboard is gone, but there is no damage to the bellows where it originally was. The nameplate on the front of the lensboard truck and the distance marker on the drop-bed is made from engraved ivoroid celluloid by the Whitehead & Hoag Co - Newark, N.J. (W&H offered discounted prices to customers who would allow them to place their name on the product). The viewfinder is remarkably clear with very little spotting or discoloration to the mirror. The UNICUM shutter is marked BAUSCH & LOMB OPT. CO. PAT. JAN 6, ’91 under the lens. 8 speeds from T, B to 1/100. Shutter is sluggish at all speeds. Aperture from f/4 to f/128 - pretty fast for this time period. Lens barrel is marked 5x7 Rapid Convertible and the glass is very clean with no signs of fungus or separation. All camera movements function flawlessly. The ground glass focusing screen is intact, with no cracks or edge chipping. The rear door is removable, held in place by 4 brass rotating tabs - it is not attached with a hinge to the camera body as is commonly found. Included are two (2) original 5x7 double plateholders in good condition - one holder is still loaded with two glass plates. One darkslide shows some damage but still works properly. The wooden holders - one dated 4-23-07 - add to the displayability of this camera. This SEROCO camera is in remarkably good condition with only minor cosmetic issues. A fastidious cleaning & dusting would elevate it to simply stunning. Add this to your 5x7 section & you will have a beautiful example of a c.1900 Drop-bed SEROCO camera that will enhance your entire collection.
