C1915 Churro Crystal Navajo Rug Native American Indian Blanket Navaho Diamond Nr:
Offered here is a circa 1915 Crystal Latchhook Diamond Navaho weaving that measures 5 feet 1 inches long by 3 foot wide or 61” x 36”. It is attributed to the Crystal Trading Post weaving area and is in very good condition with condition issues as described below. It was handwoven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native handshorn, handcarded and nicely handspun old long staple Churro sheep wool, both weft & warp. Here is an old Crystal weaving with two big bold latchhook diamond medallions on the variegated grayish brown field. There are nice stylized whirling log – pin wheel type motifs in all four corners and a red & white ribbon border. (Pepito likes it too!) No Reserve.
We obtained this vintage Native American textile on a rug hunt here in New Mexico just to offer you here on . It has a fine, even weft count averaging 30 per inch and a fine warp count of 9 per inch. Both end selvage cords are original and very good, 1 side replace & now excellent and one side partially restored to good condition. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords. Three corners are tight, original & very good to excellent and one good with a small ½” x ½” reweave. The tassels have all been restored to excellent. It is pretty clean now & comes from a non-smoking home.
Both sides are shown in photos above. There have been approximately two dozen warp loops repaired on each end of the weaving. The colors are muted due to age, light or washing. Along one side there is a small re-weave restoring warp loops measuring 3” x ¾”. Colors in this piece of old American Indian art are: hand carded & hand blended natural variegated grayish brown, light brown, dark brown & ivory white along with hand dyed aniline light raspberry & turkey red. Complete with lazy lines, this example of antique Native Americana is ready to head your way.
