Circa 1877 Old Vintage 38 Star US American Flag; Constructed of wool stripes and canton, with applied cotton stars on both sides and canvas hoist. The canton is comprised of 38 stars in a lively, \"swarming\" star pattern. Stars are hand sewn on both sides of the canton, also the hoist is hand stitched. Metal grommets on hoist are patented AUG 1884. Exterior dimensions are about 51-3/4\" x 86-1/2\". The official 38 star Flag was introduced circa 1877. In 1876, Colorado Territory was admitted to the Union prompting the addition of a 38th star to the official Flag design. The grommet patent date of 1884 suggests the handsewn hoist is a later repair. Condition: Soiling, fading, staining, scattered holes and tears with a variety of repairs. strong musty odor from previous storage. Please see photos for additional condition review.
