Very rare and original, ca1910 Oil Painting on suede leather hide of the Great Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux Holy Man and War Leader Tatanka Iyotake (Sitting Bull) by artist P. Bischoft. This outstanding original Native American Sioux Indian subject Painting on leather came to us as part of a small collection of early 20th century Native American Indian paintings which we have sold over the past few weeks.

This very beautiful Painting is executed on an irregular shaped, suede hide that measures approx. 36\" by 33\" at its greatest width and height. The Image itself is at the center of the hide and measures approx. 13” by 16”. It is titled by the artist within the image “Sitting Bull” and signed by the artist – P. Bischoft.

This is a bust portrait of Sitting Bull wearing two coup feathers and a beautifully decorated war shirt. This painting is taken from a very rare photograph of Sitting Bull by Frank Rinehart taken in the late 1880’s.

Sitting Bull (Lakota: Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake) was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader who led his people during years of resistance to United States government policies. He was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation during an attempt to arrest him, at a time when authorities feared that he would join the Ghost Dance movement. Before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Sitting Bull had a vision in which he saw many soldiers, \"as thick as grasshoppers,\" falling upside down into the Lakota camp, which his people took as a foreshadowing of a major victory in which a large number of soldiers would be killed. About three weeks later, the confederated Lakota tribes with the Northern Cheyenne defeated the 7th Cavalry under Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer on June 25, 1876, annihilating Custer\'s battalion and seeming to bear out Sitting Bull\'s prophetic vision. Sitting Bull\'s leadership inspired his people to a major victory. Months after their victory at the battle, Sitting Bull and his group left the United States for Wood Mountain, North-West Territories (now Saskatchewan), where he remained until 1881, at which time he and most of his band returned to US territory and surrendered to U.S. forces. A small remnant of his band under Waŋblí Ǧi decided to stay at Wood Mountain. After working as a performer with Buffalo Bill\'s Wild West show, Sitting Bull returned to the Standing Rock Agency in South Dakota. Because of fears that he would use his influence to support the Ghost Dance movement, Indian Service agent James McLaughlin at Fort Yates ordered his arrest. During an ensuing struggle between Sitting Bull\'s followers and the agency police, Sitting Bull was shot in the side and head by Standing Rock policemen Lieutenant Bull Head and Red Tomahawk after the police were fired upon by Sitting Bull\'s supporters.

The Painting is unconditionally guaranteed to be an original, oil Painting by Bischoft and will come with our own Letter of Authenticity with a statement of our lifetime guarantee that it will be deemed original and authentic by any third party authentication service.

This very rare and original, Oil Painting on hide is in good to very good condition. The colors are rich and warm - and the painting displays nicely. There is some age cracking and some loss to the paint and the irregular hide substrate has edge tears and some edge loss. The hide has some wrinkling and is thin so it is also somewhat fragile. There are also some scattered spots of staining as can be seen in the scans below.

A very rare and original, ca1910 Oil Painting on suede leather hide of the Native American Sioux Indian Holy Man and War Leader Sitting Bull by artist P. Bischoft and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
