I purchased a mysterious box labeled \"asian miniatures\" and this is one of the treasures I found. I was able to consult with a family member who has lived in Japan for 30+ years, the information I have on this items comes from consultation with her. Please see my other listings for other exciting items from this find!I have listed the sales 7 minutes apart for easy offerding, and will combine shipping.This little fellow is a cormorant fisherman on the Nagara River (Nagaragawa) in Gifu Prefecture, wearing his straw skirt and communicating with one of his cormorants.
It\'s a littleomiyagethat someone who visited Gifu would bring home - or that someone from Gifu would have given friends elsewhere.
Such things can be hard to date - they can be made the same way, or just slightly varied, for decades (in some cases, centuries) and they do tend to lose delicatebits, if dropped or if children have played with them. It is really a pity about the hands of this one.
Looking at the way it\'s made - the eyes and eyebrows especially - we\'d think it was early C20. The label looks newer, though, so maybe it was bought or resoldsome time more recently.
There would be many little figures like it still sold in Gifu, as this traditional method of fishing still survives.
