This book belongs in a museum. Holman opened shop in 1872 according to Wikipedia which makes this bible one of his very first and what a job they did! Love the design, illustrations and clasp. None of the other Holmans I find on have a clasp.
The bible itself is large, probably 12x16x4.
It is fragile, this book must be handled with care. In a weird way, it adds to the books awesomeness. You really get a feel for something special when you\'re handling this book.
Inside there\'s more than you can throw a stick out. There\'s an introduction to the bible. There\'s intros to each chapters. There\'s an illustrated bible dictionary. There\'s plates that are absolutely gorgeous of multi-colored stampings (see pictures), there is amazing illustrations that are full page (see pictures), there\'s an index, there\'s a fold out poster of how Jerusalem looked circa 1873.
You\'ll find my price is slightly higher than other Holmans. I\'m basing that on the clasp. It\'s a very unique feature that truly sets this version apart.
Plus, I don\'t really want to get rid of it that much even though it\'s my business :)
Condition
The cover is split at the spine on front and back and they are not connected. The clasp on the other side holds them in place when the book is closed. I remove them for viewing. The bible\'s leather is deteriorating, and their is a couple pages at the beginning that are loose (or at least one that I found but I\'m guessing there might be another). A small section is held on by just a binding string. Some mold toward the beginning of book but ends after one of the 1st plates. Pages are yellowing.
