Antique Spode Copeland’s England Ovington Bros cobalt blue gold gilt porcelain china -

Bright and deep cobalt blue with a textured or encrusted gold gilt thick border - a spectacular antique Spode pattern.

Set of 4 tea cups and saucers.

From research on the various markings, I believe this pattern should date to the early 1900s - or possibly circa 1913.

Each of the cups and saucers is marked on the base, but some have additional markings. All of the cups show theSpode Copeland’s China England marking and the artist marking in red:R3115 with two dots under the first number 1.The final cup shows the additional Ovington Brothers mark. All of the saucers show both markings.

(There is a pattern on the replacements site with the same number of R3115, but it is not the same as the pattern here.)

Size:

Cup: approx height of 2 ½ inches and approx diameter at top 4 inches

Saucer: approx diameter of 5 ½ inches

Condition:gorgeous lot - no chips, no cracks, no crazing - the pattern is still lovely and strong - the only bit of wear that I see is on the saucer interior border where the cups sit - there is a very thin gold border surrounding the indent and this thin line does show some fading. Please note, I do have a set of matching plates listed separately - they entire lot would make a lovely ladies luncheon set.

Below is some additional research on Spode Copeland in England and on the Ovington Brothers in New York.

Ovington Brothers New York:

a high end New York shop / store where one could buy some of the highest quality/fine china from Europe. They did sell items that didn\'t have their mark/name on the items/pieces but so many were made exclusively for them and did bear their name. The store, Ovington Brothers, started in the late 1800\'s and the last of three brothers to run the store passed away in 1909. The store continued to remain open by family and sell fine china/bronzes/glassware and sometime after 1920 shortened the name to Ovingtons. (So any items with Ovington Brothers is prior to 1920.)

Spode Copeland’s China England:

Josiah Spode founded his Spode pottery around 1770 at Stroke-on-Trent in Staffordshire. By 1820, Spode’s approach to porcelain became the standard formula for bone china. Spode’s porcelain pieces often featured elaborate painted decorations, sometimes with exotic or foreign characters in novel scenes. With the popularity of its bone-ash porcelain, Spode became the most successful Staffordshire pottery from 1800 to 1833. Its pieces had few flaws compared to the products of other companies—its glaze did not craze, its colors did not flake. Spode produced a wide variety of lines, including tea wares, dinner wares, and dessert wares, alongside incense burners, pen trays, cabinet pieces, and more. Master decorator Henry Daniel fostered high-quality designs on Spode’s polychromatic and gilded pieces, and C. F. Hürten painted many exquisite vases.

Each Spode piece was marked with the family name alongside a pattern number in red. This pattern number started at 1 in 1800—by 1833, it had reached 5000. In 1833, William Taylor Copeland took the reins at Spode after Josiah Spode III died.

Copeland’s production facilities remained at Spode’s original Staffordshire location. In 1970, the company’s name changed back to Spode Ltd., which became Royal Worcester Spode Ltd. in 1976. Royal Worcester Spode experienced severe financial difficulties in the 2000s and was purchased by Portmeirion in April 2009. Portmeirion has continued to use the Royal Worcester Spode name in its product line.
