For sale is a beautiful original Civil War Model 1840 NCO sword made by Ames Mfg Co. Chicopee Mass., dated 1860.This sword is in good condition with a gorgeous patina. This is likely a Confederate sword, i explain further below, we have no provinance to tell us for sure. The blade is in very good condition with a nice darkened patina, the Ricasso is marked US JH 1860 and on the other side got double stamped Made By Ames MFg Co. Chicopee Mass. . The brass handle and guard are also in very good condition, it features the double clamshell and nuckle bow guard. The blade side of the guard is marked J.H., and on the top of the nuckle bow on the blade side of the guard is a 6 pointed star, it is known that this same star mark is found on the 1859 and 1860 dated US Cavalry Sabers that were shipped South by US Sec Of War John B. Floyd which leads us to believe that this NCO sword was also one that was shipped south before the war and then carried by a Confederate Sergeant or Officer(this information regarding the star was gathered from several Civil War Historians/Experts, one of which was speaking of a sword identical to this one, I am stating this because I do not want to claim their work as my own). Also stamped on the outside middle of the knuckle bow is the initials W.A.T. This is truly an outstanding piece, certainly on the higher end of the model 1840 spectrum. This piece is guaranteed to be authentic.
