I buy vintage linens at local estate sales to pass them along to you and always keep a lookout for interesting items.This is a vintage tray from Syroco Wood Products that I believe dates to the 1940s. This has the look of carved wood but is made by a wood composite process. This process enabled them to make beautifully detailed designs by molding rather than carving. This is one of their designs, a tray that measures 12\" long by 6.5\" wide by 1.125\" tall. There are slight handles at the sides. The design features two huge chrysanthemum blossoms with large leaves; the design is symmetrical and very detailed and just stunning! To me it has an Art Nouveau look with the swirling lines of leaves and flowers. The bottom shows the pressed area and the sides have parallel lines; the top edge has wood grain detailing all around.
This has a deep brown wood color and a great shine. There is some wear around the edges and on the raised elements in the tray, as I have shown in closeup photos. These do not detract from the wonderful way the design catches the light. It displays beautifully. BTW: I looked online for comparable pieces and found two of these trays with the same design, and both are listed for over $200!! That seems way out of line for Syroco pieces, so I will start this lower.
