Description
Back in the days when the hat made the man, your average Joe tended to wear a snap-brim fedora—a slightly floppy felt number with the brim turned down in front and up in back. More formal headwear, like derbies and top hats, were reserved for very special occasions, or worn only by stuffy English gentlemen (such as Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy). In the middle of the spectrum—more formal than a fedora but not as dressy as a derby—was the homburg, a fine felt hat with a soft crown like a fedora but with a stiffer brim curled up all around like a derby. It\'s the hat you\'d expect to see on bankers, lawyers, upper-level business executives, Mafia dons like the Godfather, and any character played by Lionel Barrymore.
Here is a typical example of the classic homburg hat, with appointments and labeling that date it to the early 1950\'s. A Royal DeLuxe Stetson with the \"St. Regis\" model name, it boasts the luxuriously soft texture that assures you of a high fur content. The color is light gray, accented by a black 1 3/4\" grosgrain ribbon hatband. The curled-up brim, bound in khaki grosgrain ribbon, is 2 1/4\" wide; the crown stands about 4 5/8” tall.
A homburg is often worn bashed with only a center dent, but a lot of sportier gents (like Clark Gable in a 1936 movie I saw not too long ago) like to add a front pinch, so we\'ve shown it that way in the pictures.
Inside, the crown is lined in pale gold satin with the STETSON crest on the center panel; the sweatband is made of tan leather, gold-embossed with the Royal DeLuxe STETSON/St. Regis coat-of-arms. Interesting sidelight: the Stetson crest on the lining has a field of stars in the upper left corner, but the one on the sweatband is the newer version, with a maple leaf in that space. Stetson experts believe the logo change happened around 1952, so this hat may date to that transition period.
Size: Tagged as a size 7, with an inside circumference of 22\".
Condition: Only lightly used and still looking pretty good for its age. If you\'re making a list of flaws, you\'ll notice the initials C.W. written on the lining with a ball-point pen; a moisture stain on the grosgrain brim binding; and three puncture holes at the front of the hatband (photo 7) as if somebody had placed some decorative pins there at one time. You could do the same thing, if you had a mind to.
