1840 Toledo Steel French Cavalry Officer Sabre W. Military Inspection Hallmarks:
Attention collectors! I have something special to offer. This is a Made in Spain (on the left face of the blade just abortive the solid Brass hilt/cross-guard can be seen faintly the engraved word "Spain"), made from Spanish Toledo Steel. The French Army in the 1800's had a standing order from Spanish sword smiths to supply office grade Cavalry Sabres to be made of the finest (Toledo) steel (the enlisted soldiers Sabres were bought locally in France and all bore serial numbers; so the French Army's Quarter Master could log them into the French Army's Arsenal). Once the potential Sabres where received, they would be inspected by the Attigent (The French term literally means "touching" or "he who touches") Officer (a kind of Quarter Master specifically for the keeping and care of the Officer's Military Equipment). He would see if the Sabre met the standards set by the French Army; if so he would strike the stamped Hallmarks to the blade. "M" for a Military Grade weapon (and if the weapon met the higher Officer standards) a smaller DO with an underscore on the "O" to further designate that it met the higher requirements of an Officer Grade weapon (and would replace the common soldier's serial number). "ART" to designate the weapon was in the correct French Military required style: he would them add his own personal small stamp of "A" to designate the Attigent himself has handled and approved this weapon. "FAB" to designate that this weapon is in proper battlefield readiness: he would them add his own personal small stamp of "A" to designate the Attigent himself has handled and approved this weapon. "DE TOLEDO" to designate that the weapon was indeed made from the finest (Toledo) steel available. "1840" to designate the year it was inspected and accepted as a Military weapon to then be add to the French Officers Arsenal.
Condition: the stamps are clear (as shown in the photos: I also have a photo of the Left face length of the Sabre, a close-up of the Left hilt/cross-guard, as well as a photo of the faint "Spain" engraving but it is hard to photograph to see clearly But it is most certainly there!); the sword is in original semi-sharp, uncleaned and unpolished condition the original forge strike's are visible across the length of the blade. The Solid Brass handle is 4.5" in. hilt to pommel and 4" in. at the widest point on the belly of the guard; all is firm, whole and original parts to the Sabre. The blade is strait and 27" in. from the cross-guard to tip; the "Devils Tongue" on the bottom runs semi-sharp from the tip down under to 17" in.; the blade has a "False Edge" on top and it runs semi-sharp across from the tip to 10.5" in. The Sabre is 32.5" in. from tip to pommel nut. The blade is solidly set in the hilt and is VERY sturdy and ready for BATTLE!
