French painter, a founder of French Impressionist painting and the mostconsistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressingone's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein air landscapepainting.

Autograph letter signed “Claude Monet”. 2 pages, bifolium, 4.5 x 7.0inch (folded), Giverny, 1891 May 11. A fine handwritten letter to GustaveGeffroy in Paris. Monet asks his friend, the art critic Gustave Geffroy(1855-1926), to allow Blanche Hoschedé (Monet) access to the painting salonpresented under the auspices of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, at theChamp de Mars, in Paris. In French: “…Mademoiselle Blanche Hoschedé obligé devenir à Paris après demain 13 mai voudrait profiter de son séjour pour aller auChamp de Mars je lui promets de l'y conduire et vous prierai d'obtenir un moyend'entrer…” Two minor fold breaks expertly repaired on verso, else finecondition. Gustave Geffroy (1855-1926) was a French journalist, art critic,historian and novelist. He was one of the ten founding members of the literaryorganisation Académie Goncourt in 1900. Geffroy is noted as one of the earliesthistorians of the Impressionist art movement. As a friend he championed Monet,whom he met in 1886 while travelling for research on prisons of the SecondEmpire. Monet introduced him to Cézanne, who painted his portrait in 1895. BlancheHoschedé Monet (1865-1947) was a French painter who was both the stepdaughterand the daughter-in-law of Claude Monet. A wonderful letter with greatreference to art critic Geffroy and Monet's stepdaughter/ daughter-in-law.
