James McGuire was born at Queen Charlotte City, on September 27th 1953. As a child James spent many hours with his maternal uncle Edmund Calder, watching Edmund carve both wood and argillite Edmund Calder was the last Haida to be trained as a Haida warrior.
James also spent many hours with his older brother, the late Patrick McGuire, watching and learning how to carve and finish argillite. Argillite is the semi precious stone found exclusively on Haida Gwaii formally known as Queen Charlotte Islands and is used exclusively by the Haida to produce exquisite carvings. By 1970 James began carving on his own subsidized by a job in the forest industry. In 1976 James moved to Vancouver where he learned to engrave both silver and gold, for the most part he learned from books, museums and from renowned Haida artist Gerry Marks, Gerry Marks taught James how to temper from tempered steel.
The Haida Nation is well known among Northwest Coast art patrons for great jewelry design, and the unique designs are for most part one of a kind, featuring fine craftsmanship with great attention to detail. Each piece has its own abstract style that catches the eye of the first time buyer, as well as the long time collectors of this very beautiful art form. The design is always unique though the composition remains within parameters of basic Haida design. This practice results in pieces of jewelry that stand among the finest in the world of Haida art.

In 2005 James attended two Haida art design seminars led by Master of Haida art, Robert Davidson, cm, obc, and was presented upon completion of these seminars, a certificate entitled \"Being successful is no accident\"= this certificate hangs proudly on James\' workshop wall for all to see. James is a member of the Stastas eagle clan from Skidegate. James\' nunnai(grandmother) is Mary Tulip was the eldest niece of the famous Haida carver Charles Edenshaw, who was also born at Skidegate.
