John T. Williams (1960-2010)In the 1880s the Williams' were among the firstartists to canoe down from Canadaand selltheir craft to the early Seattle curioshops. We are offering three (3) pieces by John T. Williams. The 1st totem is *John's earliest known work. It is a stained 15" totem that was purchased in 1970 by the owners of "The Silver Belle Art Gallery" in downtown Seattle. Carved by a 10 year old boy (4th grader), it remained in the store owner's possession for 41 years. The Silver Belle closedin 1980 (41yrs ago). Wepurchasedthis artifact directly from the store owner'sEstate in December of 2011. John carved the 2nd totem in 1972 (he was 12). This totem also came out of the Silver Belle Estate. John brightly painted this totem and itmeasures about 15 3/4" tall. The store owner must have recognized the importance of thisyoung carverbecause even thoughthe totemwas inventoried, and publicallydisplayed inher store, it was NFS (not for sale). Or, a more likely scenario is that (beaming with pride) the 12yr old twinkle-eyed little boygave his creation to the female store owneras a gift? We found the 3rd totem on the Kitsap Peninsula. It measures 8 1/4" tall and he carved itbetween the years of 1980 & 1990, while he was in his 20s and in his prime. It isfinely detailed andwas originally priced at $80.00 (written in pencil on the bottom). NOTE: A well-respected leading expert on Pacific Northwest totems has contacted us andbelieves the smaller totem was actually carved by John's brother, Stacey. It is our understanding that during the 1980s-90s the two brothers worked in tandum, carving and signing each others pieces. In this case Stacey probably carved it andJohn took it to a shop to sell? The shop owner wanted it signed so John quickly carved his name on the back. At least that's the theory! He also confirmed, after speaking with the Williams family, that the Williams'hada business relationship with The Silver Belle Art Gallery (closed in 1980).
Shippingwill be $14.95 to any U.S. zipcode ($25.00 foreign).
