William POWELL - 1930 Oil Painting by C. Lennox Wright II - Paramount Pictures:
$125000.00
In 1930, as the Talkies were being born, the major movie
studios produced extravaganza movies which showcased their
top Stars. One delightful example was \"Paramount on Parade\",
featuring a long list of their well-known personalities. Check out
the IMDB listing to see the star-studded cast!
At the time, detective Philo Vance (William Powell) was in
a popular series of films-----5 years before he became even
better known as the detective known as \"The Thin Man\" which
resulted in 6 movies with Myrna Loy!
In a terrific \"murder scene\", with Jack Oakie playing the murder
victim, William Powell (as Philo Vance) investigates the crime
side-by-side with Warner Oland (as Fu Manchu), Clive Brook (as
Sherlock Holmes), and Eugene Paullette (as Sergeant Heath)!
The movie also starred Maurice Chevalier, Jean Arthur, Clara Bow,
Mary Brian, Gary Cooper, Fredric March and Fay Wray!!! And many more!
To promote the movie, Paramount Studios had each movie star
pose for a portrait done as a 20 x 30 inch oil painting. Approximately
1,500 of each portrait were printed as \"personality posters\" and sent
to Paramount\'s chain of movie theaters as publicity advertising.
Today, only a handful of these paper posters exist, and they bring
about $1,000 each when saleed.
The original oil paintings, used to make the posters, don\'t appear
at sales at all. Almost none of them still exist.
I have the best of the bunch, which has been in a private art
collection for the last 25 years. Still in its original gold wood frame,
it\'s 20 inches wide and 30 inches tall, on canvas. It\'s in excellent condition,
with only a single 1/8 inch hole (restored years ago) practicallyinvisible
in the midst of William Powell\'s black tuxedo. Signed by C. Lennox
Wright II at the lower right----and also signed (in pencil) on the back of the
wood frame.
A true rarity for some top-level Hollywood Memorabilia collector!
