GREAT piece of very early Yosemite/Sierra foothill towns history...includes two identical ads for the stage/railroad routes running thru Raymond CA and an ad for the house/hotel in Raymond...An AMAZING FIND!“Yosemite Where to Go & What to Do” (1888) is one of the rarer guide books to Yosemite and was written under the pseudonym “Lewis Stornoway” (named for the town of Stornoway in Scotland).George Gordon MacKenzie was born January 1, 1849 in New York State and died October 15, 1922, at the Sacramento Hospital in California.In 1886 MacKenzie relocated from New York to the Sierra Nevada foothills. He described himself as a newspaperman. He was 5’11” tall with light brown hair.In 1889 MacKenzie became one of eleven assistants appointed by the U.S. General Land Office to assist two Special Agents appointed to protect Yosemite National Park. The U.S. Cavalry, which normally patrolled the park, had been recalled due to the Spanish American War. The well armed assistants expelled sheepherders, arrested visitors bearing firearms, and fought forest fires. This was Yosemite’s first civilian protection force.MacKenzie also wrote articles for Century Magazine in 1890-1892 urging reform in park management.His guidebook was privately printed by C.A.
