Extremely Rare Piece and Sewn 39 Star US Infantry Regimental Flag:

I would normally describe this as a One-of-a-kind piece, but that is not the case. My research has lead me to believe that there are only 3 or 4 of these known to still exist. And that is specific to the dimensions, military association, red, white and blue tassels surrounding it and the notched star pattern. The only difference is that they are different star counts. According to RareFlags.com, there is a 38, 39 and a 40 (it appears to be a 38 with two stars added) known to exist. I have not verified this, but I do not believe that this Flag is the 39 star being referenced for one reason. After close examination to the stars and pattern, I believe this was originally a 37 star Flag (1867) with 2 stars added at a later date (1889). The reason I believe this is because on the second row of stars. The notched pattern is 6-5-6-5-6-5-6. There are 2 stars on that row that are not lined up with the other stars. Closely looking at those 2 stars, it appears that the thread that is used to stich the stars on is a very light pink color. I have 2 takeaways on this; First, if it was a 37 star, that makes this an older example from any of the others that are known to exist. Lastly, the count ends at 39 stars and there are only 10-15 of these known to exist that are piece and sewn. All of the above is enough to make this an extremely rare Flag!
Vintage military Flags are highly desirable and not as easy to come by. Most also have the markings on the hoist of the Flag that would identify the date and identity of the military branch, regiment, division, etc.. There are no markings on this Flag, but the size and shape of this Flag clearly point to what is recognized as a regiment sized battle Flag. This was a Flag that would have been taken into battle by the United States Army during the American Indian War and more specifically from 1867-1890. I am also fascinated by the period repairs to the Flag. I can only imagine bullets or arrows causing the holes or tears that were repaired by solders during down time between battles. Truly an American Treasure that could tell a story or two. The other visually stunning part to this Flag is the Red, White and Blue tassels that surround three sides of the Flag. This along with the blue sleeve hoist are standard for the military rather that commercial or citizens use.

Measurements are 74" x 74" and that includes the fringe. I would hesitate to say it is the perfect size for framing, but a piece of American History this beautiful and rare absolutely needs to be framed properly to insure it lasts another 150 years. If I do not sell this Flag, it will eventually be framed and kept in my collection. I am holding off on framing it now, because everyone's taste is a little different and you need to put the finishing touches on this Flag.
