Ukrainian military formation in the German army during World War II. The Legion under the command of Colonel Roman Sushko tried to participate in September 1939 in the German-Polish war. The detachment was originally formed in Austria from former soldiers of the Carpathian Sich, who were released from Hungarian internment in June 1939. At the end of August 1939, the Legion consisted of two understaffed infantry battalions that arrived on September 3 in Presov, Slovakia. On September 24, he crossed the former Czech-Polish border and launched an offensive through the Lemkov region, but the Germans quickly intervened and demobilized him. In April 1941, the military department of the OUN (Bandera faction), headed by Dmitry Gritsai, with the approval of the German military (Wehrmacht) circles, recruited two battalions. The northern battalion, Spezialgruppe Nachtigall, consisted of three companies under the command of Lieutenant A. Hertzner, who had completed their final military training near Neuhammer in Upper Silesia. The southern battalion of the Spezialgruppe Roland was commanded by Major E.
