In the lead-up to the 1980 process for the Republican Presidential nomination, George Bush was an \"asterisk\" in the polls until a surprise win in a very early 1979 preference poll conducted by the Maine Republicans.
Bush won the poll , and as a result of the coverage in the national media, became a serious contender. He went on win the Iowa caucuses, and did well in a number of primaries culminating in his 2 to 1 defeat of Reagan in the May Michigan primary. Though he did not defeat Reagan for the nomination, he was the strongest opponent, and was selected as the nominee for Vice President.
