Father of Matthew Henry- Puritan Philip Henry - Manuscript Sermons- 1687-500+ pg:
Philip Henry, Manuscript Sermons. Small 8vo, original 18th century calf, surface worn; newly rebacked; the sermons are written to the edges of the pages, occasionally to the detriment of the text. (3) 222 (11)pp plus 29 additional pages of sermons preached January 12 `687 to March 1688, the last page of which has the top outer corner torn away, affecting text. The manuscript begins with an Index on the verso of the front free endpaper; this lists 33 sermons which fill 222 pages (with quotations from Baxter and Flavel on the page facing the Index, on which it is noted that it was "transcribed at Bromwich - March - 740"); on the verso of this leaf is the notation "vol 2".; the sermons are dated (1685-1687): on page 214 it's indicated that they are part of a series of sermons preached on Christ's humiliation and exaltation begun October 1683 and ended January 1687. Matthew Henry collected and transcribed this volume of his father's sermons and had them bound in this and apparently at least one other volume. He much admired his father and his work on his father's sermons was a labor of love. It should be said that this volume is entirely in MH's handwriting, it having been carefully compared with another manuscript volume in his hand. Material in MH's hand is rare; this whole volume is both unique and important. Total of 536 unnumbered pages. Binding measures at 6 1/8" x 3 1/2". Also included in the sale is a book entitled "Memoir of Philip Henry" from 1853.
